Fantasy Football Rankings 2023

The Fantasy Football Rankings page represents our full rankings combining all the positions. We list the top 300 players by “value,” which goes beyond simply who is projected to score the most points, to also consider position scarcity and starting requirements. These rankings are designed to be used to draft a team.

How We Determined Value for the 2023 Fantasy Football Rankings

The 2023 Fantasy Football rankings are listed in order of “value.” That value calculation is determined by using a different baseline for each position, depending on scoring format and league size. Value is determined by comparing the player’s expected points to the expected points of the players at the same position who would be on the cutline to make a fantasy football roster.

We also adjusted the value at each position by whether the position typically required multiple starters or not, as well as by the predictability of the position.

Why do we do this? If you are in a league that starts 3 WR (or 2 WR and a Flex), but 1 QB, then it’s more likely that the WR you drafted early is going to be in your starting fantasy roster than the QB will be. You might not have a big dropoff between your top QB and the other QB on your roster. Depending on matchup, you could switch them in your starting lineup on a given week. But at wide receiver, you would need to have 3 other wide receivers be a better option, making it less likely the first WR you draft is out of your starting lineup. So value represents both value over baseline, and likelihood of getting those points in your lineup.

Defense and Kicker Inconsistency is Accounted in Our Fantasy Football Rankings

Further, some positions just aren’t as consistent or predictable from year-to-year. Kicker and Defense are prime examples of this. So you wouldn’t want to draft them the same as others, and our value calculation takes that into account. Add in that both are “single start” positions, that is, you usually start only one, and the value further decreases.

Comparing Our 2023 Fantasy Football Rankings to Average Draft Position

You may wonder how our rankings compare to average draft position results. Of course, there are certain players where we are higher or lower than consensus. In aggregate, looking at position distribution and where we recommend players should be drafted, they compare fairly well with the average draft position data, with a caveat. It’s clear from fantasy football average draft position (ADP) data that many drafters do not specifically account for the scoring systems and formats strongly enough.

For example, the difference in draft position between the top six wide receivers in standard and PPR formats last year was less than one draft slot on average. But one format strongly favors the position over the other. Our Fantasy Football rankings make these adjustments, which is why you will see a player like Austin Ekeler ranked lower on the standard rankings page than on a ranking for points-per-reception leagues, compared to other top running backs. We wrote about taking the scoring system into account in more detail in this blog post.
